One of the victims of the Eaton Fire in California was found holding a garden hose. He had stayed behind to save his family’s home of 55 years. His grieving loved ones shared the heartbreaking story.
Victor Shaw’s heroic stance in the face of danger
Victor Shaw, 66, lost his life in the fire. His charred body was discovered Wednesday morning by a family friend. He had been outside his Monterose Avenue home, where he lived with his younger sister, Shari Shaw, KTLA reported.
Refusing to leave the family home he cherished
Shari said she had begged her brother to leave the night before. The fire was coming fast. But Victor refused. He wanted to stay and fight the flames, even though he had health issues that made it hard for him to move around.
The moment Shari had to leave him behind

“I went back inside and called his name, but he didn’t answer,” Shari told KTLA. “The embers were huge, flying everywhere like a storm. I had to save myself.” She said when she turned around, the house was already starting to burn. She had no choice but to leave.
His body was found with the garden hose still in hand
The next morning, a family friend, Al Tanner, found Victor’s body. He was lying on the ground, still clutching the garden hose.
Victor’s act of love and devotion to his home
“It looked like he was trying to save the house that his parents had owned for almost 55 years,” Tanner said.
Shari’s devastation and unbearable loss
When Shari heard the news, she said she fell to the ground. She couldn’t even bring herself to see her brother’s body.
“They told me he was lying there peacefully, like he was at rest,” Shari shared.
The challenging retrieval of Victor’s body
Victor’s body stayed on the property as of Wednesday night. The fire’s conditions made it impossible for officials to safely remove him.
A grim tally of the Eaton Fire’s destruction
Victor was one of five victims confirmed dead in the Eaton Fire. This was the second-largest of five wildfires tearing through Los Angeles County. By Thursday morning, it had burned more than 10,600 acres and destroyed 972 structures.
