Although the ’90s seem like they were just yesterday, we are over 30 years away from the iconic decade that so many of us miss dearly. Along with the excellent alternative music, memorable fashion, and killer TV series that graced our television screens, the box office was a huge success in the ’90s.
The year was great for cinema, with many of the classic films we know and love dropping on to the scene. While some of these movies are cult classics, not everyone always remembers the details and the nuances behind the movie’s titles. So, do you remember these show-stopping movies?
‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’
The sequel to the original movie, The Terminator, takes place 11 years later. Jon Connor is the world’s only hope of saving them from the robots, although he is the key target of Terminators sent from the future. However, when T-800 is sent back to protect Jon, he develops a bond and relationship with the robot, leading to an unlikely friendship.
‘The Silence of the Lambs’
One of the most memorable movies of 1991, Clarice Starling is a star student training for the FBI when she is sent to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a violent and criminal psychiatrist. While he is serving a lifetime sentence, Clairce is sent to get some information out of him to help solve an FBI case — despite him being a cannibal.
‘Beauty and the Beast’
One of Disney’s most memorable movies, Beauty and the Beast, stars a rude and pretentious prince who was cursed and turned into a hairy beast. He’s locked away in a castle where his staff is turned into inanimate objects. When the Beast takes Belle, an innocent bookworm from town, captive, the two end up falling in love and saving the Beast from his awful curse before time runs out.
‘The Addams Family’
One of the classic versions of The Addams Family, this version showcases a “fake” Fester showing up at the Addams’ home, trying to get them out of town and swindle them. Morticia Addams, of course, is onto the crime, but Gomez wants to believe that his brother is truly home. Who can forget the dark and twisted ways of the Addams Family and their iconic theme song?
‘Thelma & Louise’
Two housewives trying to escape their mundane and everyday life embark on a casual fishing trip that turns into chaos and mayhem when Louise shoots a man who tries to attack Thelma one night out at a bar. This movie sets the stage for female friendships and gives a true meaning to the title of a “ride or die” friend.
‘Father of the Bride’
One of Steve Martin’s most memorable movies is an instant 90s classic. George and Nina are two parents who absolutely lose their minds when their daughter returns from studying abroad in Europe as an engaged woman. George, being one overprotective father, tries to come to terms with the wedding plans, but things go from bad to worse throughout this film.
‘My Girl’
Eleven-year-old Vada Sultenfuss has grown up around nothing but death. Her father owns a funeral home and her mother died giving birth to her. Everyone in school thinks she’s a “freak” because she’s a big tomboy whose best friend is only a boy. But, when her father falls in love with the funeral home’s new makeup artist, she spends her days trying to split the two apart.
‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’
He steals from the rich to give to the needy — everyone knows the story of Robin Hood. In this version, Robin of Locksley breaks out of prison so that he can get back home to England. However, when he returns home, he finds out that the Sheriff of his town murdered his father. Robin sets out to get vengeance and save the kingdom from the Sheriff and his evil ways.
‘Cape Fear’
Cape Fear is a remake of the classic, but Martin Scorsese does it right. Sam Bowden withholds evidence to clear Max Cady of charges of violent sexual crimes, causing Max to spend 14 years in prison. When he is finally released, Sam spends his life torturing and ruining the lives of the entire Bowden family as revenge.
‘City Slickers’
The ultimate “boy’s trip” City Slickers showcases three friends who take a vacation away from their wives every few years. However, this time, things take a turn to a bit of danger when they decide to go through a cattle drive throughout the Southwest of the U.S. Nothing says bromance quite like a trip with your best friends.
‘Boyz n the Hood’
A classic movie about growing up in tough neighborhoods, Tre moves in with his father in South Central L.A. and is taught the ins and outs of the streets. But, he meets Brandi, a girlfriend who is a faith-abiding church girl. Tre sees both sides of life, while his friends don’t have the same balance and are sucked into the gang culture and drug dealing ways.
‘Bugsy’

‘Backdraft’
In this brotherhood film, Stephen and Brian are two firefighters in Chicago who compete with each other in their careers and everyday lives. Despite one brother leaving their unit and moving on, the two are reunited when they are trying to dispel conspiracy theories about arson fires in their city.
